The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) recently announced that it would push for tough new standards when it came to the amount of sugars recommended in foods and snacks that are served to our nation’s children at school.
It is all in an effort to reduce childhood obesity, something that could easily send our country’s health care bill through the roof if not addressed. One of their prime targets was sugar, something kids have been eating far too much of for decades.
I should know – I literally used to eat sweet grains by the spoonful right out of the bag when mom wasn’t looking. True story.
The scary truth is that we all eat too much sugar – it’s not just the kids. In fact, the average American eats more than 150 pounds of sugar a year. Ugh!
And we do that in the face of all of this knowledge and high-profile awareness surrounding diabetes and the health problems associated when it develops.
The bottom line is that we all need to reduce our sugar intake as much as possible so that we can lead long, happy and healthy lives. But how? Try to take three steps …
STEP 1: Learn It
You cannot kid yourself any longer – you now fully realize that you need to stop eating so much sugar. And relax, we are not talking about the sugar in fruit, we are speaking specifically about the shiny stuff that comes in a bag.
Knowledge is key here. Read up on how awful diabetes really is for a little “scared straight”-style push in the right direction. Then just wake up one day and decide to go sugar free.
STEP 2: Love It
Embrace your new sugar-free existence. Have fun sampling all of the sugar-free treats out there on the market, many of them terrible. Learn to love diet sodas, and the stigma that goes along with them.
STEP 3: Live It
At first, it will seem like a lot of extra work coupled with heroic displays of will power, but once you settle into a sans-sugar lifestyle, it is kind of nice. You can actually feel the difference pulsing through your veins (or maybe that just the Splenda talking).
I once went 3 months without any sugar outside of a bit of orange juice every now and then and felt terrific.
And guess what? My body started to turn away from sugar, the sight of it almost became unappealing. I didn’t miss it anymore. My energy level was less like a roller coaster.
