If you have ever had a dream that you followed your whole life, you know the feeling you get when you come so close to seeing it become a reality. That is the sentiment captured here in this nearly perfect landing of SpaceX’s Falcon 9 reusable rocket on a platform in the Atlantic Ocean. It is the third attempt by the company and CEO Elon Musk tweeted:
“Looks like Falcon landed fine, but excess lateral velocity caused it to tip over post-landing.”
The program was not a total loss though, as it successfully completed a mission to deliver supplies to the international space station. The whole point of the operation is to ultimately make space travel less expensive by saving the vessels that go into orbit.
“If one can figure out how to effectively reuse rockets just like airplanes, the cost of access to space will be reduced by as much as a factor of a hundred…A fully reusable vehicle has never been done before,” added Musk.
