Hey man, how’s it going? Good, glad to hear that. Listen, I don’t mean to be rude, but I need to ask you to stop reading this right now. I’m serious. I’m not mad though, I just know you, and I know you’re not fully focusing on this letter.
As much as I would love that we could be more like our female counterparts, the reality is that our multi-tasking level is close to -0.93. So go ahead, finish everything you’re doing right now and everything you want to finish after this. When you’re done, when you’re really done, get back to me…
That’s better, buddy.
Where were we? Oh yeah, that’s right, I was about to change your life.
Do you remember the day you first said you were going to lose all those extra pounds? You knew how much you hated to eat healthy, but that wasn’t going to stop you. Anyways, why eat all the boring food when you can choose the easy way out?
Life Hack #7,042: Dietary Supplements
They might as well be called the “How-Not-to-Eat-Your-Veggies-While-Still-Getting-Lean Pills,” right? Well, not so fast. I hate to burst your bubble, but you’re not touching one of those again. Ever.
You see, while taking nutrient-rich synthetic pills to boost your vitamins and minerals daily intake might sound like a good idea, I’ll give you a couple of reasons NOT to do it.
You Are Not a Doctor
(Unless you are, of course). It’s not just that you don’t have the slightest notion about nutrition at the molecular level, but also the fact that what you’re getting into your system hasn’t been scientifically proven to be either safe or effective.
Since dietary supplements are not regulated as rigorously as prescription drugs, their manufacturers are pretty much off the hook. So even if the package promises to transform you into one of the Spartans from the movie 300, you might want to reconsider that and read the lines where it says:
“This statement has not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.”
Basically, that means that whatever they claim to be the benefits of their product, there’s no one able to back that up but themselves. Pretty reassuring, isn’t it? More so, if there’s to be any kind of risk directly related to the use of such supplement, well, good luck. You’re on your own, soldier.
Do you want to know what happens when a person who’s not a doctor writes his own prescription for a health product? Lucky for you, I’m going to tell you right now.
The Dark Side Of Dietary Supplements
Your High School pool party reunion is just a couple of months ahead, so you might want to start taking extra doses of vitamins and minerals in order to get your Greek body faster.
Let’s examine what other changes your body might experience.
- Excessive Calcium can lead to kidney stone formation.
- Excessive amounts of vitamin A in supplement form can cause:
- Liver damage
- Reduced bone strength
- Birth defects
- High doses of Zinc can cause:
- Organ damage
- Extended use of vitamin B-6 can cause nerve damage.
- Selenium and Iron can be toxic in large amounts.
Besides all these risks, the benefits of dietary supplements may be a bit overrated. Even though they do contain the amount of vitamins and minerals their label specifies, they will never be able to substitute the nutritional value of whole foods.
Take the phytochemicals, for example. They’re invaluable and potent nutrients that are produced naturally on vegetables and fruits, but cannot be found on synthetic supplements. The same thing happens with fiber, which supports the digestive system and general heart health, but is also missing in the pills.
You might not be convinced yet, and I understand. I promised to change your life and all I did was tell you to throw away your expensive supplements so you can go back to your couch and watch as your beer belly grows without measure.
The Secret Remedy
Not so fast. We are both gentlemen of the highest standards, so I intend to keep my word.
I will now share with you my most cherished secret, my Fountain of Youth, my magic formula, my true life hack.
Fruits & Vegetables
Wait, what?! I started buying all these pills because I couldn’t even smell a carrot and now you tell me that the solution is to go back to what was the problem in the first place?
Yes. That’s exactly what I’m telling you.
Let’s be honest. Nobody likes vegetables; that’s a fact. Some people might think they like them, but they don’t. They just taste like something you wouldn’t put in your worst enemy’s mouth.
That was to be expected, since almost every good thing in life comes at a high price. Workouts don’t tickle you, studying is no fun, and by the time you learn how to ride a bicycle you’re missing around 5 extremities and half of your upper teeth.
Not everything is lost. There IS a way around this, and as soon as you learn it you will regret not knowing about it 30 pounds earlier.
I first experienced my epiphany one weekend I went home to visit my parents. My dad makes the best orange and lemon smoothies, so I’m used to expecting either one of those every time I visit him. This time everything changed.
He asked me if I wanted to try something new, a mix of a bunch of different fruits. Since I love fruits, I said yes without thinking about it twice. I have to admit the color was anything but attractive, but at the moment it made sense to think it was due to the extensive variety of ingredients.
I fell in love with that smoothie.
When I finished and asked for more, he told me something that blew my mind. I haven’t been the same man since.
He showed me a list of 18 ingredients, from which only 6 were fruits. Yes, your guess is right. That smoothie was a nuclear explosion of vegetables, greens, seeds, and nuts, and I didn’t even notice!
It’s All In the Fruits
The secret, he told me, lies in the dominant taste of the fruits; especially from using 100% orange juice as a mixer instead of water or milk.
Finally! There is a way of eating all your daily portions of vegetables without the need to cook them, smell them, or be tortured by them in any possible way.
Here are some of the vegetables he included in my life-changing smoothie.
- Sweet Chard
Mix as many as you like (all of them would be optimal) along with your favorite fruits. Pineapple, watermelon, banana, blueberries, strawberries, and apples are some examples of great vegetables companions. Add a portion of nuts and seeds to boost your protein intake, and pour in the key ingredient: orange juice. It will almost single handedly take care of masquerading the infernal vegetables’ flavors.
Here’s a list of William Paterson University’s top 41 “powerhouse fruits and vegetables” ranked based on their amounts of 17 critical nutrients. Have fun!
Does It Work?
I wouldn’t be wasting your time if it didn’t. After just one month drinking his shakes, my father was able to stop taking his hypertension pills for the first time in 20 years.
Need more? Here’s more.
When my father told his brother, who suffered from health complications due to massive overweight, he started the smoothie diet immediately. Four months ago, my uncle cut off all the junk food, sodas, and excessive sugar from his diet.
His new diet consists of:
- 1 smoothie in the morning
- 1 chicken breast/fish + salad meal a day
- 1 smoothie at night
He went all the way down from 335 lbs. to 278 lbs. That’s 57 pounds lost in 4 months (and counting), without doing any exercise at all! His last lab results showed that his cholesterol, sugar, and hormone levels are all finally back to normal.
For the first time in my life, I no longer depend on power naps to survive my days. The energy that a well-balanced diet provides you is surreal. You know who else feels more alive than ever? My wallet!
What about you? Are you going to keep reading about my family’s health success or are you going to make some stories of your own? I say you better get started.
