By Anne Cacherell

With all the unsolved mysteries and mystifying theories surrounding us, whether it’s real or not, everyone dreams of finding a hidden treasure. While it can be unbelievable at times, there are really chests and stashes of gold out there waiting to be discovered.

On June 17, 2015, a family of underwater treasure scavengers, using their salvage vessel Aarrr Booty, recovered rare gold and silver coins and artifacts hiding in just 15 feet of water. Worth over $1 million, the find was from a 1715 Spanish treasure fleet that was brought down by a hurricane in the Atlantic Ocean 300 years ago.

The Florida family, led by 27-year-old diver Eric Schmitt, found the treasure 1,000 feet off the coast of Fort Pierce.

Queens Jewels, LLC, the company who owns the right to the wreckage, will get half the bounty of everything recovered.

The treasure was part of the Tierra Firme fleet that transported gold, silver and other precious resources from Spanish colonies in the New World to Europe.
