Tired of the ugly portrayal of Africa by media, Young Africans around the world are using Twitter with the hashtag #TheAfricaTheMediaNeverShowsYou to showcase their continent’s hidden beauty.
For the benefit of those who are confused, Africa is not a country. It is the world’s second largest continent with 54 countries.
As a host to a large diversity of ethnicities, culture and language, it would be wrong and unfair to overgeneralize the population and present them to the public highlighting only chaos, starvation, corruption and disasters.
Flaunting Africa’s beauty through photos of their natural resources, modern architectures, cultural events and unique fashion, the hashtag attracted over 50,000 tweets and retweets to date.
Do you think this Twitter campaign is effective in terms of challenging the stereotypes about the continent? Share with us your thoughts.
