This is an incredible story of a boy with autism and his mother and how their adopted Pit Bull Roxy changed their lives.
At the age of 7, Joey Granados was diagnosed with Asperger disorder, a type of autism in which the person experience difficulties in social interaction and non-verbal communication. Since Joey hates physical contact, his mother Amanda couldn’t even give him a hug.
One day, Joey, who is now 14, told his mom that he wanted a dog. His mom didn’t have second thoughts and visited the Los Angeles animal shelter right away to adopt one. Joey and Roxy’s first meeting filled the whole room with excitement. It was as though they already knew each other for a long time. The day Roxy came home with them is the same day Joey embraced and kissed his mom for the very first time.
“For all those years, he wouldn’t hold my hand, he wouldn’t hug me. It was all part of the autism, but this dog has taught him how to give and show affection.” Amanda said.
The company of dogs and other pets have been proven to help physically and mentally disabled people to overcome anxieties and gain social functionality. Don’t you think this is something inexplicably magical? Share with us your thoughts.
