Big Moves Require Big Action

In recently announcing that they are planning to open 300-400 physical bookstores nationwide, Amazon seems to be spawning the very type of business it is so notorious for shutting down.

The move is an interesting one from our perspective because it seems to go against the whole purpose of being an online business, especially when you are as big as Amazon.

While it probably won’t happen for a while, Amazon is providing you with a valuable lesson in business.

What is it?

They are recognizing a trend and taking action.

In the last 3-4 years independent bookstores have been making a comeback and the numbers prove it. The American Booksellers Association noted that in 2015 overall sales rose by 10% and the American Association of American Publishers reported trade adult book purchases increased month over month last year.

Then Amazon saw this happening and thought, “Who has more books than us? Hahaha, no one!” and decided to do something about it.

Sure it is a HUGE RISK. After all, isn’t the whole point of shopping online the convenience of not leaving your house?

But then again, in 1995 who was shopping online for books when you could just go to the store or library. Right?

Learn to Trick Your Brain In Order to Destroy Procrastination

I must admit fellas; the brain is a fascinating topic to me. So when the science of it gets broken down to my level, it’s intoxicating.

In this instance, you’ve got to check out the piece How To Finally Stop Procrastinating (For Real This Time) by writer Bob Nease. He explains how these two areas of your brain are responsible for the ebb and flow of responsibility and motivation:

  • The Neocortex: A relatively newer part related to decision making and learning ability
  • And the limbic system: a million plus year old part mainly concerned with the here and now

When you decide to do something good like workout or eat better, that’s your neocortex reasoning in favor of beneficial activities. Then when you go to cash in on your decision, your limbic system goes into beast mode to get you to stop.

Usually it says something like, “Exercise tomorrow and eat fast food now!”

By learning a few tricks like outsourcing chores, changing up your “present-day stakes”, and easing into your new changes, you can train your limbic system to be a better sport about engaging in the things it secretly wants.

Your Ideas Should Be a Thing

Like out in the world for all to hear, see, use, whatever. And to do that, it helps to know a thing or two about what people are interested in.

There are many ways to go about this, but I recommend checking out 14 Factors Contribute to Viral Success, by writer Annie Pilon. Using data from popular trend tracker Buzzsumo, Pilon has put together a great list of traits that will help you visualize a better way to get the attention you want.
