When we’re in school we spend a lot of time focusing on learning new topics because have to. Now that we’re out of school we aren’t as interested (not that we were really interested in school before) in learning new things.
However, that is one of the ways that we can keep our brain sharp and keep away diseases like Alzheimer’s and dementia. Not to mention the fact that women think that intelligent men are attractive.
#1) Draw Pictures and Diagrams
Drawing helps stimulate your creativity and helps to invigorate the right side of your brain. Not much of a doodler? Spend some time with your kids, nieces, nephews, and/or cousins and draw with them. It’s an excuse to get colored pencils to paper without feeling like a six-year-old. Or at least, it’s more appropriate this way.
The interaction with kids will help build strong relationships between you and your family and that helps your brain as well. It’s really a win-win.
#2) Skip the Chips
Junk food is known to create a brain fog and slows you down a lot so instead of grabbing a bag of chips or a box of cookies for a snack, opt for a handful of nuts or a veggie tray.
#3) Learn New Topics
Learning new things helps build the structure of your brain by building neural connections (like new bridges and roads of communication in your brain). The more connections the better, so don’t be scared to grab a set of textbooks.
Learning new things isn’t limited to academics either. Learning a craft or a new hobby is also good for your brain. However, if you do want to learn something new that is a bit more sophisticated and challenging (like academics) try learning a new language.
You can also head over to your local bookstore or your local second-hand store and check out the textbook section. The textbooks are a lot cheaper at places like Goodwill are a lot cheaper than Amazon or a college bookstore. Besides, if you’re looking to gain a little fundamental knowledge on basic physics, you don’t need the latest edition of the newest textbooks.
The latest brain-boosting apps for your phone, tablet, and desktop are fantastic. Luminosity is a website that’s been around for a while. They have an app which focuses on certain aspects of your brain function: problem solving skills, processing speed, flexibility, memory, and attention span. There is a free version which only allows you access to a certain number of activities and a paid version which costs about $15 a month.
#5) iOS Apps
Most of you own an apple device which is great because if you look in your app store, you can find tons of different apps to download that will help various brain functions.
Brain Fitness Pro helps you increase focus, problem-solving skills, and your memory. The activities in the game will help improve these sections of your brain, which will be great for the long run and help you keep away diseases like Alzheimer’s and dementia.
Happify is a great (and free) app that will help you cope with anything from everyday stresses to traumatic instances by playing activities that help conquer negative thoughts and feelings. This is an ability that will stay with you. Positive thinking people have been studied and it has been noted that they live longer and happier lives in comparison to more negative thinking people.
#6) Get Enough Sleep
I’ve gone over the importance of sleep more so I won’t go in depth with it here. However, the fact remains that since it has come up so often in my studies, it is incredibly important. Getting a good night’s sleep on a regular basis helps hit the “reset” button on your brain. It can help you see things (like problems at work) in a new light, which will (in turn) help you solve your problems.
#7) Breathe Deep
Doing breathing exercises helps you by increasing oxygen levels in your brain. It also helps to increase blood flow to your brain (which also helps to bring it more oxygen). To start, you can just to about 10 minutes of deep breathing a day. It doesn’t take much to help your brain function. 10 minutes isn’t even a whole break at work. You still have time to hit the bathroom and chat up Sally the sexy secretary.
#8) Debates and Discussions
Speaking of chatting people up, getting in a good, healthy debate with a friend or colleague is a great way to increase your brains ability to think quickly and apply knowledge to current events. This is one of the reasons why it is a good idea to have different types of friends and connections. While hitting the bar with your old college buddies is fun, having an intellectual discussion with some colleagues is also a great idea.
#9) Stimulate Your Brain with Your Environment
Changing up your environment is a great way to keep your brain stimulated. Think of your brain like a little puppy. When a puppy is in an area that he knows really well (for an incredibly long time), it gets bored. It doesn’t have anything to explore anymore. When you take him out for a walk or to a new dog park, it wants to explore everything and find out about all of the new smells.
Your brain works the same way.
